If you're looking for something to do between now and Halloween, that will absolutely scare the crap out of you, go to The Bloodfields, at RiverBreeze Fear Farm (corn maze), just outside Truro, NS.
That place is freakin' SCARY!
I could end the post right there.
That's really all there is to say.
So, if you're looking for a fun and terrifying way to spend part of your evening ...
GO!
If you dare ....
Four years ago, the best friend and I took the boys to the RiverBreeze Corn Maze during the day.
Last Saturday night, we all went back, but it was an entirely different experience!
I really had no idea what to expect.
A few people jumping out at me from the corn, with a menacing 'Arrrraaaaaagggghhhh', ?
Some well placed decorations, and oooooooooooooh scary music?
Ppppffffftttt. I'm a 41 yr old woman. I could certainly handle THAT!
We got into the huge lineup and waited.
The rain that had been on and off all day, was off at the moment.
However, it was still looking like the BloodMUDfields. Great.
As we stood there, outside the wall of corn, I could hear the screams coming from behind the rows.
LOTS Of screams.
And chainsaws. Yes ... more than one.
What the hell was IN there?!?!
We didn't have to wait long to find out.
We only spent 10 minutes in the lineup, but I think part of that time was due to 'something' going on inside.
Just as we approached the gate to begin, a couple of security guys walked quickly, into the maze.
Yup, something was definitely going on.
Never did find out what it was, but there was an ambulance and police car on site, when we got out of the field about 20 min or so later.
Kind of glad we didn't see these BEFORE walking into the corn to join the psychos.
Finally, we're allowed in.
We set foot through the entrance, and the rain starts.
Nothing like adding to the scary ambiance of the evening, huh?
Thanks, Mother Nature!
NOT!
I don't want to tell you exactly what you'll find in the maze, because I don't want to ruin the experience for anyone who plans on going.
What I WILL say, is that it started IMMEDIATELY and didn't stop until we finally staggered out the exit.
Suffice it to say, I came face to face with every one of my teenage nightmares, wielding every weapon, from every scary movie that had me frozen in my chair, buried under a blanket, hands over my face, on many weekend nights.
Only problem in The Bloodfields was, I wasn't in a chair.
I was running.
And I couldn't keep my hands over my face, because I needed to see WHERE I was running, since those psychos with their knives, and axes and chainsaws weren't only gettin' up in my face, and 'this close!', but ....
CHASING ME!!!!
REPEATEDLY!!!!
KUDOS to the actors. They were AWESOME!
They seemed to be able to sense ... or smell the fear and got up close and chased after me all the more.
Oh and don't you worry, the 'older boys' may have been strolling on through, nonchalantly, but I know of, and saw many other people running away screaming also!
I'm not going to lie.
This 41 yr old woman was F-R-E-A-K-I-N-G O-U-T!
Terrified.
Everywhere I turned, I was facing some dude waving knives, carrying and ax, or a zombie wanting to eat my brain!
And do you have ANY idea how hard it is, to run through a corn maze, in the rain, slipping in the mud, being chased by murderous freaks, with your hair rain-soaked and plastered to your face?
NOT EASY! People! Not easy!
It was like something out of Chainsaw Massacre or Friday the 13th.
It became very clear to me, very quickly that I looked like, 'Dead Girl #1' in any scary movie you've seen.
That rain-soaked chick, running, stopping, running, stopping, turning around and running into a BIGGER dude, running around him and screaming for her life ... yeah ... that was me.
Then, between the running, and screaming, and sheer ... utter ... unrealistic fear, combined with the fact I've had bronchitis for two weeks, coughing from chainsaw fuel, and completely overdressed for running from serial killers, clowns and the walking dead ...
I lost my breath.
Literally. Couldn't. Breathe.
And THAT was scary!
I stopped dead in my tracks.
I think those around us could tell something was wrong, because the ghouls backed off immediately.
The poor kids weren't sure what to do.
Thankfully the Bestie went into mom-mode and took over and kept us calm and together while I took some time to regroup.
I had to take off the jacket, and spent more than a few minutes gasping for breath. I just couldn't get enough air.
Tunnel vision set in.
Everything was closing in around me. The people, the voices, the screams, the corn.
I think if the kids hadn't been with us, I would have just dropped.
Right there.
Let Chainsaw Dude drag me back through the soggy rows. I'm done!
However, it's going to take more than crappy lungs to take this, 'Dead Girl #1' down!
Once I felt I could walk and breath at the same time, we finished the last (thankfully!) leg of the maze.
For this last part, I tried not to look at what was coming at me.
I could FEEL them! Right THERE.
See them out of the corner of my eye.
But I wouldn't look.
Cause if I looked, I'd have to run from what was staring back at me.
And running just wasn't a good thing.
Breathing and enjoying the rest of the experience was a good thing.
And I did.
Enjoyed it immensely!
I had to use my puffer as soon as we got out of there, and back to the car, but I did, I really DID enjoy the whole thing.
And in a surprising twist, I was no longer 'Dead Girl #1, but 'Survivor #6'.
Yay me!
And of course, most importantly, the boys, the Bestie and I, all had a fantastically terrifying time!
Having said that ... keep in mind, it's not for everyone.
Some may not even find it 'scary'.
Although I certainly wouldn't bring a YOUNG child!
No no NO!
But ... if you think you can handle the fear, and suspense ...
Make your way into The BloodFields ...
Go toe to toe with that towering, overall wearing, butcher knife carrying, hockey mask head ...
And just hope you make your way out ...
